Video: Jacob Teichroew Quintet Live at Cornelia Street Café

The summer of 2013 was a period of change, accomplishment, and creativity. I began teaching music full time in a wonderful charter school in Manhattan, my debut CD Tableaux was released, and I spent three weeks in May and June studying music at the Banff International Jazz Workshop with Vijay Iyer, Ravi Coltrane, Tyshawn Sorey, and many others.

Studying in Banff, amid the Canadian Rockies, was a mind-opening experience. It helped me cement ideas about music that had been slowly forming over the last ten years. I also studied with and played music with dozens of inspiring people. I returned to New York with a refreshed attitude toward making music.

Luckily, two weeks after returning, while I was still basking in a new light, I performed my album release concert at Corelia Street Café. Even more luckily, the concert was video recorded. When I listen to the result, I can hear the joy that I discovered in Banff. Here’s the first video, of a piece called “Sleepless Eyes:”
